A Piano Tech's Guide to Duluth Trading
Tool
Bags:
Sometimes a product is good enough to have a
web page made about it.
Hopefully, this page will make it easier to decide which tool bags
fit your needs.
My Personal Picks:
I use the "Big
House" for my tuning and most often used tools,
the "SuperMax" for repair kits
and less-frequently used items,
and "Karl's Lunch Box" for keeping
my chemicals insulated.
Everything I need for field work fits in 3
matching bags!

The"Big

It holds everything I need for tuning, regulation and
voicing.

a huge capacity that is well organized.

● Stores your invoices, forms, and brochures.
● Is easy to carry, and durable enough for years of abuse.
● Won't damage doorways, furniture, or your car's interior.
● Has plenty of room for your Accu-Tuner or other ETD.
● Has 59 Interior Pockets, 31 Elastic Tool Straps
● Measures 16"L x 10¼"W x 13"H

The "SuperMax" Tool Bag
On the outside, it's a longer version of the Big House.
On the inside, the back half compartment is all open space
instead of pockets and straps - perfect for larger tools and
repair kits.
Why did I buy the SuperMax?
It holds all my repair kits, spare parts and
supplies (restringing, rebushing keys and flanges,
hammer shank repairs, cordless Dremel kit,
heat-controlled iron and attachments, felt,
punchings, etc.). That's a lot to put in one
bag, but having just 3 bags makes unloading
the car a breeze.

Karl's
Lunch Box
Insulate Your Chemicals
From Temperature Extremes
(Adhesives, Lubricants, Polishes, Sprays, Solvents)
Extreme temperatures can ruin
our chemicals, but sometimes we have to leave them in the car.
During the summer or winter, it's important that they be kept
insulated.
"Karl's Lunch Box" is my choice for storing chemicals.
It's the medium-sized lunch box / cooler that Duluth Trading
sells. The top and bottom halves are insulated. I use the
bottom part for my chemicals, and the top part for rags and
polishing cloths, empty dispenser bottles, hypo
needles and caps.
Of
course, you can buy one as an actual lunch box,
and It comes with reusable ice packs. Cats
like it, too.

The Other Tool Bags
and Lunch Boxes:
If your
need even more storage, or if you want to travel extra light,
there are more options to go larger or smaller than the bags listed
above.
These are not shown, but they look just like the bags pictured
above. |
The "Jail
House" Tool Bag
Looks just like the Big House, but a little smaller
in size. Some techs use this to carry a more basic tuning kit.

44 pockets, 20 tool straps |
"Louie's
Lunch Box"
This is the smallest of the three lunch box / coolers.
For most technicians, this would be enough space to insulate
all the glues and lubricants carried in the field. Using small,
refillable dispenser bottles cuts down on the amount of space
required. (Not pictured, but looks similar to the one above.) |
12½"L
x 8½"W x 11½"H |
"Tiny's Cooler"
This thing is big, and made for storing lots of food,
so it's probably more useful for going on family picnics than
for transporting your piano service chemicals. (Not pictured.)
